Name—Country Comment
Nagley, Hope—USA Surgery should be performed only as necessary for the physical health and well-being of the child, avoiding the traditional model of unnecessary cosmetic genital surgery.
Naiman, Ingrid—USA As a therapist, I work with traumas, often ones that function below the threshold of consciousness. In many instances, these contribute to some kind of sociological, psychological, or physiological dysfunction that is a life-long source of suffering. In other cases, the experience acts in such a way as to modify behavior, a coping device but one that would not have become necessary had there not been a trauma. I believe circumcision stigmatizes males. At minimum, it makes them feel separate, as in "males are very different from females." As the experts behind this movement well know, the ramifications can be much more serious and have repercussions that spill into public life. At this time of global crises, I feel that it is time to teach cooperation instead of competition and I believe that this will be easy to achieve when males are not so testosterone toxic.
Nalladaroo, Soonnu—India ' I remember as a six or seven year old fiercely arguing with the doctors and nurses about why they wanted to botch up my one day or one week old baby brother. I'd forgotten about all that and thought that other issues made me a freethinker and writer (I'd also launched lists and petitions for Muslim women sentenced to be stoned to death for adultery later) but I guess all children are freethinkers at heart and do not respect the conventional wisdom, they can think better than educated doctors on simple subjects. And this isn't only about Genital Integrity. It is about Humans having a right to choose. Especially I argued that doctors should cause no harm, so it is weird that doctors have been endorsing genital mutilation all the time for no reason except that it was socially accepted!
Neese, Erin—USA Circumcision: It's mutilation, any way you slice it!
nelson, david—USA
nelson, stephen—Canada I made the decision to have this done as an adult. The procedure was a minimal inconvenience with no difficulty. I wasn't aware of how much sensitivity would be lost but the decision was mine to make. Out of respect for our sons we must leave this choice up to them alone.
Nelson, Vanessa—USA Education is the best route. If we simply make it illegal and parents still think it benefits their kids, they will go to black- market surgeons to get it done. We need to teach them how dangerous and damaging it is.
Netherton, Danielle I believe it is an archaic tradition that should be a decision made by the individual. Since babies cannot speak for themselves, they shouldn't be forced to have their most intimate and private part of their bodies violated. It is just as bad that physicians and nurses do not know about how to care for an uncircumsized, natural penis. My son was violated and had his penis fully retracted when he was an infant in the PICU after he was born. I am still fighting for his rights and have yet to find legal representation to help me fight on his behalf. I wish our culture as a whole was more accepting of leaving boys intact as they were intended to be. Because our culture does not accpet this as "normal" and often times even refer to it as gross, physical assaults like that of my son occur daily. I am mortified that the medical profession does not get on board with the basic, common knowledge that we know today. It deeply saddens me for all babies and for my son.
Neubert, Nicole—Germany What a sad society we are to attack our own offspring's genitals. Stop genital mutilation now! Stop hurting children! From Nicole, 10 June, 2002: Hello! Of course you may make my location public! If it is of any help for the cause, please do so! Here in Germany I have yet to meet a non-Muslim in favor of infant circumcision. People here think the US is nuts for doing this to babies. Anyway, I'm so happy and relieved to see how circumcision slowly but steady goes down, and I'm confident that there will be an end to it, thanks to people like you who do something about it. Please keep the good work up, the babies need you so despreradly!! Respectfully, Nicole Neubert
newham, colin—Australia mindlessness ,,, uncoerced choice by the individual....the only sustainable arguement for bodily alteration
Nichols, Michael—USA I am against circumision because it is battery and mutilation on an uninformed person who is not able to say yes or no to the procedure. The adult parent or guradian should not have the right to force his/her values and views on an infant who does not have a voice in the matter.
Nickel, Regine—USA I vividly remember the day I became aware of this monstrous cultural habit. I changed my newborn godson's diaper and saw his awful wound. I began to research this and 11 years later am still shaken to the core. This must stop.
Niemann, Carl—South Africa It is through ignorance that parents mutilate their baby boys! Educate them to stop this terrible act! Circumcision of an infant is illegal mutilation and people doing so should be jailed for it.
Nirman, Samantha—United Kingdom The cutting of genitals without consent of the individual AND medical indication AND conservative treatment being exhausted first is barbaric and unethical. When done to babies it is sexual assault and malpractice. I'm horrified that it continues.
Noble, Elizabeth—USA This must stop! I work on this issue every day of my life!
Nolan, Don—USA Circumcision destroys the sexual design and violates personal sovereignty. Circumcision is destructive to the function of the human body and violates the individual child's rights to make their own choices about their own body.
Noll, Mary—USA There is no reason to have circumcision of baby boys OR girls as anything but an archaic ritual of torture that needs to be put in the past with other forms of ritual, such as animal sacrifice, stoning of adulterers and blood letting. All it does is deprive a baby of their choice and their rights to their own body, and marks them with the ignorance of a society that practices this mutilation.
Noll, Mary —USA This should be outlawed world wide! If a religion said that human sacrifice should be allowed, would that be 'okay'? NO! So why is the torture of infants allowed under religious guises? The infant is too small to be able to worship. This choice should be left up to them when they become an adult.
Nordbakke, Michael—Norway "Custom will reconcile people to any atrocity" (George Bernard Shaw).
Norden, Pierre—South Africa Circumcision is sick. I find it hard to believe people do this to each other. My dad was Jewish and spared me the knife - the man might not have had foreskin, but he had foresight. Thanks, Dad.
Northrup, Christiane—USA There is no medical reason to perform genital surgery on normal newborns. This practice is barbaric.
Norton, Dennis—USA Genital integrity is every body's birthright. I believe we must stop routine infant circumcision. I was sexually mutilated by a botched infant circumcision, for which I am bitter. As a victim of complications of circumcision, I am strongly opposed to it. My aim is to help prevent other men's lives from being "spoiled" forever, by this harmful tradition.
Novini, Misha—USA Anyone who does not know enough about circumcision does not have the right to suggest or support it, especially doctors. Any doctor who supports circumcision without knowing the consequences should permanently lose his doctor's license.
Novoa, Martin—USA Social circumcision of children -- males and females equally -- has no place in a civilized society. In the United States the practice has its roots in chicanery, lousy medicine and contempt for children and continues today because of greed, lack of ethics, and a continued disregard for human rights. If it is not made criminal, courts should quickly recognize every victim's right to sue for civil damages. Circumcision of minors is disgusting and barbaric.
nunes, jeffery—USA everyone has a right to his/her body. no one should be granted the authority to usurp another's rights to self determination of one's own body, with the exception of medical emergencies (as long as the treatment is not against explicit wishes of the individual). medically unnecessary infant circumcisions are comparable to other forms of sexual violence and abuse and should be treated as such. circumcision is no different than unnecessary removal of a little toe or an earlobe, except that it involves the genitals. it should not be allowed or tolerated except in medically necessary circumstances or when requested by the individual for himself/herself when he/she is legally of age to make such decisions.
Nunez, Sareena—USA Genital integrity for all!
Nurre, Abby—USA I don't understand why so many pro-life people are also in favor of circumcision. The only reason it came to existence was for control (mostly religious). We do not accept female mutilation or any other so why accept this nonsense.
